JackTrip Virtual Studio

Making online experiences more human

Sing with your chorus, or jam with your band without leaving home. Virtual Studio is a tool for musicians that enables them to produce music together over common Internet connections. It delivers high quality sound with minimal time delay, so that musicians can keep the beat and stay in harmony. JackTrip creates the experience of being together in the same room, even when you are physically hundreds of miles apart. That's why thousands of musicians worldwide use JackTrip to rehearse together, perform together, and laugh together.

High quality, authentic audio

Our ears are far more sensitive than most people realize! The heavily delayed, poor quality audio offered by most technology today leaves us feeling disconnected and fatigued. Collaboration online just doesn't sound real, making our online experiences emotionless and disappointing.

JackTrip is different. It was created at Stanford University to connect musicians, the most discerning audiophiles of us all. JackTrip creates an authentic and natural experience by using uncompressed, CD quality audio (48khz, lossless). After all, the real world is in full quality.

Hear everyone, equally

Many technologies only let one person speak at a time, making natural group conversations awkward and difficult, and music impossible to perform.

JackTrip mixes everyone's audio together according to user-customizable digital signal processing, giving everyone in the room a voice (or instrument)!

Moving sound at the speed of light

All sound we hear is delayed somewhat, but studies have shown that live music requires under 25 milliseconds of delay. Any more than this, and you start to notice the lag.

JackTrip transports sound at the speed of light, which travels about 7500 kilometers (4660 miles) in 25 milliseconds. But the Internet isn't quite that efficient, yet. While JackTrip can be used across any distance, musicians have the most success when they are all located within a range of about 1000 kilometers, or 500 miles.

Our web application makes it effortless to reserve virtual studio room in over 50 locations worldwide, with more locations coming online all the time.

Made possible by cloud computing

Other low-latency solutions use a peer-to-peer model, which places an enormous burden on your home Internet connection. Practically speaking, it just doesn't work for more than a few people at a time.

The JackTrip Virtual Studio solves this by leveraging state-of-the-art cloud computing technology originally developed to help a boys chorus with over 200 members sing together, from their own homes. It is regularly being used by groups of over 100, and we've tested it using simulated groups of up to 500. When it comes to scale, nothing comes close.

Dedicated hardware

To simplify setup, we created the JackTrip Bridge- plug-and-play hardware that runs all the software you need.

The JackTrip Analog Bridge provides excellent quality audio with minimal delay for line-level sources and dynamic microphones.

The JackTrip Digital Bridge connects via USB to a compatible microphone, interface, or other audio device.

Open Source Software

While our bridge devices offer the most streamlined experience and lowest delay, you can also connect using the free JackTrip Core desktop app which is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

This is a great option if you'd like to try JackTrip before committing to a hardware purchase, and you're not scared of a little software setup!
